Apple Berry Crisp

Crumbly, sweet, and sticky, our homemade Apple Berry Crisp will become your go-to fall dessert. In addition to fresh apples, we choose to mix our crisp with a handful of berries and just a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg. The NESCO 6 Qt. Roaster Oven bakes crust to golden perfection. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or simply enjoy it on its own.

Grocery Ingredients:

6 large apples, cored, thick slices
1/2 cup blueberries, fresh
1/2 cup raspberries, fresh
1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1/4 cup sugar, granulated
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1½; tsp cinnamon, ground
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp lemon peel, grated
1 (9″) pie crust, unbaked

Pie Crust Topping
:
1 cup granola
1/4 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
2 Tbsp butter

Instructions:

  1. Remove cookwell. Preheat heatwell of 6 Qt. NESCO® Roaster Oven at 350° F.
  2. In large mixing bowl, combine all ingredients except pie crust. Stir well.
  3. Roll pie crust into rectangle slightly larger than cookwell. Place crust in bottom of cookwell.
  4. Place apples and berries evenly over crust.
  5. In small bowl, blend topping ingredients. Sprinkle evenly over fruit mixture.
  6. Place cookwell in preheated heatwell. Cover and bake 30 minutes.
  7. Reduce heat to 325°F. Bake an additional 15 minutes or until apples are tender. Serves 8 – Serve warm with ice cream and a dash of cinnamon. You may substitute fresh or frozen cranberries, strawberries or cherries for either blueberries and/or raspberries.


Easy Fruit Rolls

Our Easy Fruit Rolls recipe is ideal for snacking on-the-go. Made with nature’s natural sweeteners, kids and parents alike will enjoy this healthy treat. Use any variety of our NESCO Dehydrators to thicken fruit puree into chewy, juicy strips. If you want, add your favorite mix-ins such as nuts or fresh fruit.

Grocery Ingredients:

24 oz jar applesauce, any flavor
Fresh, pureed fruit, powdered, flavored gelatin, coconut, or nuts (mix in or sprinkle on top before drying)

Instructions:

  1. Wipe a NESCO® Fruit Roll Sheet (lightly) with any type of cooking oil. To make small roll-ups, place several tablespoons of applesauce on a sheet.
  2. Spread to 1/4″ thickness, about 4″ in diameter. Depending on how large you make them, 6 to 8 can fit on a fruit roll sheet.
  3. Place in your NESCO® Dehydrator on a dehydrator tray. Dry at 140° F approximately 5 to 7 hours or until dry and not tacky.
  4. Remove and place in a storage container.

Option: Entire fruit roll sheet may be covered with applesauce mixture and then dehydrated. When dry, cut into individual serving sizes.


Candied Strawberries

Candied Strawberries In Yogurt

Not sure what to do with all of your leftover summer pickings? Our Candied Strawberries recipe is the perfect solution. After sprinkling sliced berries with just a bit of sweetener, let your NESCO Dehydrator do the work. We love this crispy snack in trail mix, yogurt, or even on top of breakfast cereal.

Your Key Ingredient:

Grocery Ingredients:

1 lb fresh strawberries
3 oz strawberry gelatin
1/2 cup powdered sugar

Or substitute:
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup lemon juice

 

Instructions:

  1. Wash strawberries and remove stems. Slice thinly.
  2. Sprinkle lightly with strawberry gelatin and powdered sugar, or dip in honey and lemon juice mixture. Honey/lemon yields chewy berries while strawberry gelatin/powdered sugar results in crunchy berries, similar to those found in store-bought cereal.
  3. Place slices on NESCO® Clean-A-Screens and place on your NESCO® Dehydrator trays.
  4. Dry 4 hours at 135° F until crisp.

Apple Pie And Cheese Roll-Ups

If you’re craving a sweet and nutty snack, our Apple Pie and Cheese Roll-Ups were made for you. While most fruit roll-up snacks are filled with artificial ingredients, this recipe combines healthy fruits, nuts, cheese, and is made right in your NESCO Dehydrator. The warm nutmeg brings out the sweetness of the applesauce and subtle cheddar flavor for a memorable treat both you and your kids will love.

Your Key Ingredient:

NESCO Fruit Roll Sheets

Grocery Ingredients:

4 cups regular applesauce
3/4 cup pecans, ground
1/2 cup cheddar cheese, grated
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg

Instructions:

  1. In a food processor, puree all ingredients. Spread evenly onto NESCO® Fruit Roll Sheets. Fits 2 large sheets and 1 small sheet.
  2. Place in your NESCO® Dehydrator on dehydrator trays. Dry at 135° F for 4 to 8 hours, or until leathery.
  3. Gently peel and remove sheets while still warm. Let cool and tear into 4-inch pieces for rolling.
  4. Store in dark, dry, cool place or in freezer.


8-Inch Cheesecake

Dazzle guests at your next get together with our classic 8-inch Cheesecake. Rich and decadent, this homemade recipe rivals any store-bought dessert and can be prepared right in your NESCO Roaster Oven. After preparing ingredients, simply cover and bake in the cookwell for the perfect creamy texture. Paired with a dollop of whipped creams or berries, you won’t be able to turn down a second slice.

Grocery Ingredients:

Crust

1/3 cup finely chopped pecans
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 large egg
2 Tbsp butter or margarine

Filling

8 oz plus 1 (3 oz) packages cream cheese
2 large eggs
1/3 cup sugar
2 Tbsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Preheat NESCO® Roaster Oven to 375º F. Combine crust ingredients in medium bowl; stir until well blended.
  2. Pat into 8″ springform pan. Set pan on rack in preheated cookwell. Cover and bake 10 minutes. Remove pan from cookwell; set aside. Cover Roaster Oven.
  3. Meanwhile, combine filling ingredients in medium mixing bowl; beat with electric mixer on medium speed until smooth. Pour filling batter over crust in pan.
  4. Reduce temperature to 350º F. Set pan on rack in hot cookwell. Cover and bake 55 to 60 minutes or until set.
  5. Transfer pan to cooling rack, away from drafts; cover with towel. Let cool 1 hour. Cover; refrigerate until serving time. Serves 6.


Apple And Raspberry Cobbler

Grocery Ingredients:

1 (9″) pastry crust
1 large egg yolk
1 Tbsp water
8 large baking apples, peeled, cored, thickly sliced
1 pint fresh raspberries, rinsed
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice

Instructions:

  1. Remove cookwell; cover heatwell. Preheat NESCO® Roaster Oven to 375º F.
  2. Using a rolling pin, roll out dough on lightly floured surface to form an 11 x 7½;” rectangle. Pat dough into bottom of cookwell.
  3. Combine egg yolk and water in small bowl; whisk until blended. Brush over pastry. Set cookwell in preheated heatwell.
  4. Cover and bake 12 to 15 minutes or until dough begins to set.
  5. Layer apples and raspberries over dough; sprinkle on sugar and spice. Cover and bake 30 to 40 minutes or until apples are tender. Serve hot. Serves 4 to 6.

Fact: the only thing tastier than fresh berries off the vine are fresh berries tucked inside a warm, fruit pie. Our delectable 7″ Fruit Pie recipe is no exception. Juicy, flakey, and overflowing with sweetness, just one slice probably won’t be enough. The Key Ingredient to this recipe is your NESCO Roaster Oven. Simply mix ingredients, set, and enjoy the perfect pie in one hour.

Grocery Ingredients:

1 double-crust pastry recipe
2 cups fresh fruit or berries
1/2 cup sugar
2 Tbsp flour
1/4 tsp each cinnamon and nutmeg
1 tsp lemon juice
1 Tbsp butter or margarine

Instructions:

  1. Preheat NESCO® Roaster Oven to 425º F.
  2. Prepare crust recipe. Roll out 1/2 of pastry dough and line bottom and sides of plate.
  3. Mix fruit, sugar, flour, spices and lemon juice. Pour mixture into crust-lined plate and dot top with butter.
  4. Roll out remaining crust, cover top of pie. Seal edges. Slash top to allow steam to escape.
  5. Wrap edge with foil*, place in roaster, and bake 50 to 60 minutes.
  6. Remove foil for last 1/2 of baking period. Serves 6.

*Cut strip of foil about 37″ long and 2″ wide. Wrap band of foil around outside edge of pie crust. Crimp overlapping ends. Fold over edge of pie to prevent over-browning.

Grocery Ingredients:

3 cups sweet, red apples, cored, and finely chopped
1 cup quick-cooking oatmeal
1/4 cup wheat germ
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 cup plain yogurt
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
1 tablespoon honey, optional

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine apples, oatmeal, wheat germ, and cinnamon. In a separate bowl, combine yogurt, applesauce, and honey.
  2. Pour yogurt mixture over apple oatmeal mixture; blend well. Drop by tablespoon onto NESCO® Fruit Roll Sheets. Place in your NESCO® Dehydrator on dehydrator trays.
  3. Dry at 135° F for 5 hours or until cookies come off sheets easily. Turn over and dry 1 hour more. Makes roughly 33 cookies.


Cherry Pineapples

These delicious dried cherry pineapple snacks taste just like candy. Chewy, tart, and tropical, you won’t be able to keep them stored in the pantry for long.

1 can pineapple rings, any size
1 jar maraschino cherries, any size

Instructions:

  1. Drain canned pineapple rings and cherries then place on paper towels for a few moments to finish absorbing any liquid.
  2. Place pineapple rings in your NESCO® Dehydrator on trays and put a cherry or two in center of each. Dry 8-10 hours at 135°F.


Butterfinger Bites

"Butterfinger" Bites

Try our twist on your favorite classic candy bar. Made right in your NESCO Dehydrator, these “Butterfinger” Bites are almost just as crispy and nutty as their store-bought namesake. You can enjoy all of the crunch with none of the guilt. Pack a few bites for the road or grab a handful for whenever those 2 p.m. cravings hit.

2 cups sweetened coconut flakes
2 cups dried apples, chopped
2/3 cup smooth peanut butter
1 ½ Tbsp vanilla extract

(Optional: dip in melted semi-sweet chocolate after drying)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients. Mix well.
  2. Shape into 1/2″ balls. Place in your NESCO® Dehydrator on dehydrator trays.
  3. Dry at 135° F for 4 to 5 hours, or until firm and crisp on the outside. Makes about 3 dozen.
